Method 1: Create a manual copy of your company file

The occurred issue is of a great concern which can be as similar as the location of company file. Create a copy of your main company file which you can use it to create an additional portable copy.

  • Click to open the Windows Start menu.
  • Enter “File Explorer” into the search bar and choose to open File Explorer.
  • Locate for and search for the folder which has your company file. This usually resides in your company file.

If you have tried to create a portable company file

  • Search for your main company file with a .qbw extension which looks like this: [Name of your Company File].qbw.

  • Choose Opening or restore an existing file. Then click on the Open a company file option.

Rename original company file in QuickBooks and save it as “old” in the name which you will not use in future.

If you are still planning to restore a portable company file

  • Search for your portable company file saved with .qbm extension like [Your Company File].qbm.
  • Right-click on the file and click on Copy.
  • In your Windows desktop, right-click on screen and click on Paste.
  • Open QuickBooks but make sure not to open your company file.
  • Click on Opening or restore an existing file. Then choose the Restore a portable file option. Search for your computer and open the portable company file which is copied and you have pasted to your Windows desktop.

If you can open the portable company file which is copied, you can continue with your accounting. You can access this to move your accounting data. Rename the original portable file and put “old” in the name so you don’t use it again.

Method 2: Open a sample company file

You can access a sample company file to create a portable company file.

  • Double click on the icon of QuickBooks Desktop.
  • Rather than selecting your company file, click on Open a Sample File. Then open one of the sample companies.
  • In the sample company file, go through the steps to create a portable company file.
  • Save it on your Windows desktop.
  • In QuickBooks, choose the Filemenu and click on Close Company/Logoff.
  • Go through the onscreen steps to open the portable company file which you have created in the sample company.
