If I am creating a backup of my company file.

If you are getting QuickBooks error while creating a backup company file, then you need to follow below given points:

  1. Click & close QuickBooks from all computers which is connected to your network. Then select Quit QuickBooks Desktop from the file menu.
  2. Click & open window from start menu.
  3. You can type “File Explorer” into the search option and open it.
  4. Choose My Computer from the navigation bar.
  5. Click on file explorer then open your C: drive. Then open your Windows folder.
  6. Click on file explorer then open your C: drive.
  7. Click on the right and then select New and then Folder to create a new file folder.
  8. You may need to follow the steps, if you want to create a backup company file. In case, if QuickBooks ask where you want to save the backup, then you can save it to the folder you have just created on your C: drive.
  9. You may need to follow the steps, if you want to restore your company file using the new backup.

Still, if you are not able to see error -6000, -83 anymore, please start using your backup as your main company file. We will request you to not use your old company file anymore.

If I was restoring my company file.

If you are getting the error -6000, -83 while restoring your company file.

Solution 1: Need to check your backup filename

You need to make sure that there should not be any symbols, special characters, or spaces in your backup company filename or the folder which you are holding.

  1. You need to open the Windows from Start menu.
  2. Click & open File Explorer.
  3. Search and open the folder of your backup company file.
  4. Click on the right end of the file name and select Rename. Backup company file will open.
  5. It is required to delete special characters, symbols, or spaces from the filename.
  6. Click on the right folder which is holding the QBB file and then select Rename.

In case, if you still getting the error -6000, -83, then move on to Solution 2.

Solution 2: If you create a portable company file.

In case, if you are not able to restore your QBB file, you need to go back and then required to open company file.

  1. You may need to follow the steps, if you want to make a portable company file (also known as a QBM).
  2. You can also use the portable company file to restore your company file.

Still, if you see Error -6000, -83, then move on to Solution 3.

Solution 3: User can restore your backup file from your local hard drive.

If user find that their backup company file is currently on their server machine, then they can move it to a local hard drive. This is usually your C: drive. Then follow the steps to restore your company file. Once you fixed the error, then you can move your company file back to your server machine.

Note: In case, if your backup company file is on a network, you can open it from either a mapped path or UNC path. You can also start with the path you’re currently set up for. If that will not work, use the other path.

In case, if I will keep my company file on a Windows server machine

User need to follow these steps if their company file is saved on a Windows server machine.

  2. No need to open the company file. You can select the File menu and hover over Utilities option.
  3. In case, if you still see the “Host Multi-User Access” option, no need to select it. You can move on to the next workstation.

Solution 2: User can use QuickBooks File Doctor

Solution 3: You can restore from a backup

Solution 4: You can edit your Windows host’s file

In case, if you still getting any errors then you may need to test your network to see if it is still causing the error. Open one of your workstations and it will be required to follow the steps to edit your Windows host’s file.

In case, if I will keep my company file on a Linux server

In order to keep your file on a server then we will recommend these steps if user will be familiar with Linux networks.

Solution 1: Required to configure your Linux server

  1. It is required to open Linux Database Server Manager on your server machine.
  2. It is also required to follow the steps to configure Database Server Manager and the directory in the Initord.conf file.
  3. You can restart QuickBooks Enterprise on your host computer machine.

Solution 2: You need to configure your host file in QuickBooks Desktop

In order to configure your host file, you need to ping your server to get your server name and IP address:

  1. Click & open windows from start menu computers connected to the network, open the Windows Start menu.
  2. You need to enter “CMD” into the search and open Command.
  3. Enter the name of your server in the window and press Enter.
  4. You can write down the server’s name and the IP address.

You can also edit the host files. Please make sure that all the computers which is connected your server should have the correct IP address and Linux server name. you can start with the computer machine where you see this error -6000, -83.

  1. Click & close QuickBooks from all computers which is connected to your network. select Quit QuickBooks Desktop from the file menu.
  2. Click & open window from start menu.
  3. You can type “File Explorer” into the search option and open it.
  4. Choose My Computer from the navigation bar.
  5. Select & open your C: drive. Then it is required to open your Windows folder.
  6. You also need to find the System32 folder. Now, open the Drivers folder and then the ETC folder.
  7. Click on right of the file called C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts. Select Open with and then Notepad.
  8. Click on the bottom of the file. You can add the Linux server IP address to the end of the text. Then press the Tab key and add your Linux server name. 
  9. Click & select File and then Save. Then close Notepad.

You need to open QuickBooks Desktop machine and your company file. If you can easily open it that means everything is fixed.
