Suppose you are using any device and if your Windows firewall blocks internet access for exact QuickBooks programs or files, you may see an error message. Do not hesitate! QuickBooks Customer Support will guide you how to set up your firewall, and if that does not work for you then you need to manually configure your firewall settings and security settings.

Method 1: Automatically Configure firewall ports

  • Firstly you should be aware of using and downloading QuickBooks File Doctor.
  • QuickBooks File Doctorautomatically opens your firewall ports and organizes your Windows firewall.

Method 2: Manually Configure firewall manually

  • Add Firewall port exception for QuickBooks
  • If you are using multiple versions of QuickBooks Desktop on same computer, perform these steps for each version:
    • Open the Windows Start
    • Type “Windows Firewall” into the search bar and open Windows Firewall.
    • Click on Advanced Settings.
    • Right-click on Inbound Rules (later on, you’ll create Outbound Rules). Then select New Rule.
    • Click onPort and then select Next.
  • Be sure yourTCP is selected.
  • In the Specific local ports field, enter the specific ports needed for your QuickBooks year version:
      • QuickBooks Desktop 2020: 8019, XXXXX. .
      • QuickBooks Desktop 2019: 8019, XXXXX.
      • QuickBooks Desktop 2018: 8019, 56728, 55378-55382.
      • QuickBooks Desktop 2017: 8019, 56727, 55373-55377.
  • After entering the port number, click on Next.
  • Select “Allow the Connection” and then click on Next.
  • If pressed, make sure all profiles are marked Next.
  • Create a rule. Give it a name like “QBPorts(year).”
  • When rule is created, click on Finish.

To create Outbound Rules repeat above steps.  Below we are again discussing to select Outbound Rules

  • Add Firewall port exception for QuickBooks
  • If you are using multiple versions of QuickBooks Desktop on same computer, perform these steps for each version:
    • Open the Windows Start
    • Type “Windows Firewall” into the search bar and open Windows Firewall.
    • Click on Advanced Settings.
    • Right-click on Outbound Rules. Then select New Rule.
    • Click on Port and then select Next.
  • Be sure yourTCP is selected.
  • In the Specific local ports field, enter the specific ports needed for your QuickBooks year version:
      • QuickBooks Desktop 2020: 8019, XXXXX. .
      • QuickBooks Desktop 2019: 8019, XXXXX.
      • QuickBooks Desktop 2018: 8019, 56728, 55378-55382.
      • QuickBooks Desktop 2017: 8019, 56727, 55373-55377.
  • After entering the port number, click on Next.
  • Select “Allow the Connection” and then click on Next.
  • If pressed, make sure all profiles are marked Next.
  • Create a rule. Give it a name like “QBPorts(year).”
  • When rule is created, click on Finish.

Open your QuickBooks Desktop and turn on computer into multi-user mode. You can also open QuickBooks over your network from one of the host computers. If you still face issues or error messages.

Create Windows firewall exceptions for QuickBooks programs

QuickBooks uses executable files (.exe) to perform various tasks. You need to create firewall exceptions for each of these executable files:

  • Open the Windows Start menu.
  • Type “Windows Firewall” into the search bar and open Windows Firewall.
  • Click on Advanced Settings.

  • Select Program and then Next.
  • Select This Program Path and then Browse.
  • Find and select one of the executable files on the chart above. Then select Next.
  • Select Allow the Connection and then Next.
  • If prompted, make sure all profiles are marked. Select Next.
  • Create a rule. Give it a name like “QBFirewallException(name.exe).”

To create outbound rules

  • Open the Windows Start menu.
  • Type “Windows Firewall” into the search bar and open Windows Firewall.
  • Click on Advanced Settings.
  • Right-click on Outbound Rule.Then select New Rule.
  • Select Program and then Next.
  • Select This Program Path and then Browse.
  • Find and select one of the executable files on the chart above. Then select Next.
  • Select Allow the Connection and then Next.
  • If prompted, make sure all profiles are marked. Select Next.
  • Create a rule. Give it a name like “QBFirewallException(name.exe).”

Set your anti-virus or firewall programs

If you configured your firewall but still have issues, check your antivirus settings.

Be sure QuickBooks has general permissions so it is not blocked.

Make sure TCP is selected

Enter the ports needed for your QuickBooks version (year).
